Shannon Coulombe

Lead Teacher and Co-Owner

Shannon lives in Beaumont with her three children, Jace, Brett and Kayla.  She is an experienced teacher and holds a Bachelor of Education degree with a focus in early childhood education, as well as her Level 3 Early Childhood Supervisor certificate.

With 8 years of elementary school teaching experience, she has taught grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 and was a vice principal for one year before she resigned from teaching to stay at home with her children. While she was at home raising her kids, she opened a licensed day home and worked as a level 3 child care provider for 4 years. She also became a Barefoot Books Ambassador and Team Leader during this time.  Children’s literature is one of Shannon’s passions, and she is very inspired by the Barefoot Books mission statement: Share Stories, Connect Families, Inspire Children. She has an incredible collection of quality children’s literature at her disposal and she has met many world renowned authors and illustrators, as well as the CEO of Barefoot Books, on a number of occasions.

Once her youngest child reached school age, Shannon was approached by our staff to take on the position of Lead Teacher at RSG Preschool.  She was excited at the prospect of working in a preschool setting, and accepted the position with much enthusiasm. Her education degree has a focus in early childhood education so, in many respects, this job has brought her back to where her teaching journey began and to where her passion for teaching resides.

Over the past few years, Shannon has developed a strong interest in the Reggio Emilia Approach to early learning.  She has read many books and articles, and has taken numerous online courses that promote the values of the Reggio Emilia Approach, namely that the classroom environment serves as the “third teacher”, children should be valued and have a voice and lead in their learning, and play is the foundation of developmentally appropriate practice.

If you visit our classroom, you will recognize that she feels most in her element with a book in her hand, reading to her students.  Literacy is a cornerstone of the program we offer, and Shannon most definitely brings a richness of literacy experiences to our classroom environment.

Wendy Woods

Educational Assistant

Shannon lives in Beaumont with her husband Alastair and her son Kailand. We first met Shannon when her son attended our 3 day program at RSG Preschool. She was a supportive parent who showed a genuine interest in our work. We soon learned that Shannon has more than 20 years experience teaching and working with young children.

Shannon graduated from the Early Childhood Education program, with honours, in June 2002 from Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario.  She has her level 3 early childhood supervisor certificate.  She has completed workshops from the Institute of Child Psychology, with a primary focus on helping children with anxiety and ASD.

Her work experiences have reflected a wide variety of childcare settings.  She began her career caregiving for families in Barbados, West Indies.  She then moved on to teaching in a primary school, also in Barbados.  More recently she has worked as a support aid at a local childcare centre and as a substitute support staff for Black Gold School Division.

In September 2020, Shannon joined the team at RSG Preschool.  She works with our preschoolers 3 days a week.  Shannon balances both leadership and love in her interactions with our students.  Many of our students have gravitated towards her fun-loving spirit.  Her energy and enthusiasm for early learning is second to none.  We are thrilled to have Shannon as part of our team!

Krista Tomich

Educational Assistant

Krista Tomich, our teacher’s assistant, began working at RSG Preschool in August of 2017.  She is married and has 3 beautiful daughters.  Krista and her family have lived in Beaumont for a number of years.

Krista went to Red Deer College and worked as a pharmacy technician for 16 years, 12 of which were at the Cross Cancer institute as a chemo trainer and as an inventory management technician.  She then decided to focus more on her family, so she resigned from her position at the Cross Cancer Institute to stay at home with her children.  For a short time, she did work at WestJet which she thoroughly enjoyed, but the hours proved to be too challenging for their family life at the time.

All of Krista’s girls attended Ready, Set, Grow Preschool.  She always enjoyed volunteering and attending field trips.  Krista has very fond memories of being a parent within our preschool community.

Krista was provided the opportunity to earn her Level 1 in Child Care, and become part of the team at RSG Preschool.  She has a special gift of connecting with some of our more shy and reserved students.  Her warm demeanor and bright smile always puts even the most anxious children at ease.  She develops positive relationships with the children very quickly and easily.

Krista is very happy to be a part of this amazing preschool and she enjoys helping the children grow and learn within our wonderful classroom environment.  She has been a fantastic addition to the team at RSG Preschool!
